Cloudera acquires Verta AI to enhance enterprise AI capabilities

Tue, 4th Jun 2024

Cloudera has announced the acquisition of the Verta Operational AI Platform, a strategic move aimed at bolstering its capabilities in artificial intelligence. Verta's AI experts will join Cloudera to address the growing demand for AI solutions among its global customer base.

Verta, founded on research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), pioneers in model management and governance for predictive and generative AI. With this acquisition, Cloudera plans to leverage Verta's technology to enhance its platform, which currently manages 25% of the world's data. This integration is expected to enable users to build, operationalise, monitor, secure, and scale AI models efficiently across various enterprises.

According to Cloudera's CEO Charles Sansbury, the acquisition is a vital step in strengthening the company's AI operational capabilities. "We are moving quickly to provide our customers with the technologies they need to drive their data and AI initiatives, and we have no plans to slow down," said Sansbury. He further hinted that this acquisition might be the first of several strategic moves designed to extend Cloudera's leadership in the data management and enterprise AI sectors.

The Verta platform, which supports hybrid and multi-cloud AI solutions, aligns well with Cloudera's mission. The company emphasises that Verta's technology simplifies turning datasets into custom retrieval-augmented generation applications. This capability allows developers, irrespective of their machine learning expertise, to create and optimise large language models (LLMs) suited for business applications.

Founded by Dr. Manasi Vartak and Dr. Conrado Miranda, Verta has been at the forefront of addressing operational challenges in AI deployments. It provides tools for effective model management from development to deployment and monitoring. These features, encompassing Verta's genAI workbench, model catalog, and AI governance tools, are expected to substantially enhance Cloudera's ability to deliver enterprise AI solutions.

Dr. Vartak remarked on the compatibility between the two companies: "Good data breeds good models, which is why Verta and Cloudera's technologies are a perfect match. Cloudera has the most data under management compared to any other platform in the world, making it the clear choice to bring the vision for our innovations into reality." She expressed optimism that the combined efforts of Verta and Cloudera would unlock significant potentials for organisation-wide AI and enhance the user experience from data insights to actionable outcomes.

Cloudera boasts a substantial presence in data management, with its platform representing the only true hybrid open data lakehouse capable of integrating analytics and AI for business data across on-premises and multiple cloud environments. The platform ensures unified governance and security, enabling enterprises to develop and deploy AI applications effectively.

In this acquisition, Jefferies LLC is serving as the exclusive financial advisor to Cloudera, underscoring the strategic importance of this deal in Cloudera's broader roadmap for AI dominance in the enterprise sector.

The collaboration between Cloudera and Verta is anticipated to bring forth innovative AI-driven solutions capable of transforming enterprise data management and operational efficiency, reinforcing Cloudera's commitment to leading through data and AI advancements.
