AI's transformative impact celebrated on AI Appreciation Day

Mon, 15th Jul 2024

As AI Appreciation Day approaches on 16 July, the significance of artificial intelligence (AI) in today's business landscape is becoming increasingly evident.

Several industry leaders have shared their insights on how AI is transforming various sectors, from cybersecurity to data management and beyond.

Gavin Jones, Area Vice President for ANZ at Elastic, highlights the pivotal role AI plays in enhancing business operations. Elastic’s solutions for search, observability, and security are built on the Elastic Search AI Platform, which is utilised by thousands of companies, including more than 50% of the Fortune 500. Jones emphasises that AI is essential for driving business development and shaping strategy in today’s competitive environment.

In the realm of cybersecurity, Sharat Nautiyal, Director of Security Engineering for APJ at Vectra AI, underscores the transformative power of Generative AI (GenAI). Nautiyal points out that GenAI-based digital tools significantly enhance threat detection and response capabilities, allowing organisations to identify and mitigate real-time threats. However, he also warns of the potential dangers, noting that 75% of cybersecurity professionals have observed an increase in AI-powered cyberattacks over the past year, with 85% attributing these attacks to the malicious use of AI by threat actors.

Nautiyal stresses the importance of integrating AI carefully within security frameworks to ensure it acts as a robust defence mechanism rather than a vulnerability. He cites the example of AI tools like ChatGPT, which have been exploited in recent email phishing attacks, as evidence of how AI can be both a boon and a bane in the cybersecurity sector.

Meanwhile, Anthony Spiteri, Regional CTO APJ at Veeam Software, highlights the company's innovative use of AI to enhance data resiliency. Veeam has integrated AI capabilities into its Data Platform, including a cutting-edge malware detection engine that proactively identifies threats by analysing vast amounts of data. Spiteri also mentions Veeam's partnership with Microsoft, which focuses on leveraging AI to provide more efficient data management solutions. This collaboration aims to deliver insights from Microsoft 365 backup data and improve security posture through AI-driven analysis.

Henry Kho, Area Vice President and General Manager for Greater China, ASEAN, and South Korea at NetApp, discusses the crucial role of intelligent data infrastructure in achieving AI success. According to Kho, data is the backbone of all AI processes, and an intelligent data infrastructure is essential for ensuring seamless data integration across on-premise and hybrid cloud environments. This allows for the effective preparation, movement, and analysis of data, which is vital for training and developing AI models.

Kho further explores the principles of responsible AI, which include fairness, interpretability, privacy, and security. He argues that ethical AI practices are necessary to establish trust and transparency in AI applications and to mitigate risks associated with data governance and compliance.

These expert commentaries reflect a broad consensus on the transformative potential of AI across multiple industries. From enhancing cybersecurity defences to improving data management and operational efficiency, AI is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of business. As organisations continue to navigate the complexities of AI integration, the insights shared by these industry leaders provide valuable guidance on harnessing AI's capabilities while addressing its inherent challenges.

AI Appreciation Day presents an opportunity to reflect on these advancements and celebrate the strides made in artificial intelligence. As AI technology continues to mature, its applications are expected to become even more powerful, driving innovation and fostering a more secure and resilient digital world.
