Cloudflare launches open-source AI workspace for firms

Cloudflare has launched Cloudflare OS, an open-source AI workspace for businesses based on the system it uses internally.

The software is designed to give technical and non-technical staff access to AI tools and internal company systems through a browser, without requiring new infrastructure or extensive custom development. It is available through an open-source repository, with a managed deployment option to follow through Cloudflare's dashboard.

The launch reflects a broader push by technology suppliers to move AI beyond specialist developer teams and into routine workplace use. In many organisations, however, security, governance and integration concerns have slowed wider adoption.

Cloudflare OS is built around the idea that a company can capture its internal processes, knowledge and system connections once, then make them available across employee workspaces. Cloudflare says this avoids restarting from scratch in each AI session and reduces reliance on ad hoc tools that can be difficult for IT teams to monitor.

Thousands of Cloudflare employees already use the platform for tasks including research, document creation linked to live data, automating repetitive work and building applications for day-to-day use. The same framework is now being made available to other organisations as open-source software running in a customer's own Cloudflare account.

Security model

A central part of the product is its use of Cloudflare's Zero Trust access controls. Every user and request is verified before access is granted, while AI agents start with no permissions and receive only the access needed for a specific task.

Organisations can also use governed connectors, which Cloudflare calls Gatekeepers, to control what an AI system can view, what it can alter and when human approval is required before an action proceeds. The structure is intended to address a key concern around workplace AI tools: the risk of broad or poorly supervised access to sensitive internal data.

The software is also designed to work with multiple AI model providers rather than a single supplier. Through Cloudflare AI Gateway, administrators can track spending by individual, team or application, and set budgets, rate limits or route simpler jobs to less expensive models.

Internal origins

Cloudflare framed the release as the external version of a platform developed for its own workforce. That internal origin is notable because several technology companies are beginning to commercialise software first built to solve operational problems inside their own businesses.

Matthew Prince, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Cloudflare, said the company created the product because it could not find an existing option that met its needs for connecting AI tools to the systems staff already use while maintaining security controls.

"Cloudflare OS is how we run Cloudflare. For AI to truly transform an enterprise, it can't live in a silo or behind a developer bottleneck. Every employee needs the ability to build, iterate, and automate safely. Our employees get AI tools connected to the systems they actually use, and security isn't something IT has to bolt on afterward," said Matthew Prince, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Cloudflare.

"We built this because nothing else did what we needed. Now any company can start from where it took us years to get," Prince added.

Partner role

Cloudflare is also working with implementation partners including Presidio and Happy Cog to adapt the software for more complex customer environments. These partners can tailor deployments to industry requirements, existing technology stacks and compliance needs.

That partner-led model suggests many customers will require significant configuration before the software can be deployed at scale. While Cloudflare is positioning the product as broadly accessible to employees without developer expertise, integration into internal systems remains a substantial task in most large organisations.

Happy Cog, one of the named partners, linked the platform's appeal to governance concerns around autonomous agents and internal AI tools.
