Axis launches ARTPEC-9 chip for AI & video imaging

Axis Communications has launched ARTPEC-9, the newest version of its system-on-chip, aiming to enhance video imaging, AI analytics, and cybersecurity.

The ARTPEC-9 system-on-chip (SoC) is designed by Axis Communications to advance the company's capabilities in several essential areas, such as AI-powered analytics and imaging quality. Axis plans to incorporate the ARTPEC-9 SoC into specific network video products starting in early 2025.

Uniquely in the network video sector, ARTPEC-9 supports the AV1 video encoding standard from the Alliance for Open Media (AOM). When combined with Axis Zipstream, AV1 minimises storage costs while maintaining crucial forensic details.

ARTPEC-9 enhances Axis' core image processing technologies, including Axis Lightfinder and Axis Forensic Wide Dynamic Range (WDR), which are integral to Axis Scene Intelligence technology. These technologies enable higher performance for analytics applications, leading to consistent analytics outcomes and efficient forensic search capabilities, even in challenging surveillance circumstances.

The chip's development has been structured to improve AI analytics significantly, offering greater accuracy and the ability to detect smaller objects from a distance, thereby providing valuable insights for security and operational needs. This accuracy also allows for more detailed differentiation between various object classes.

Cybersecurity has been a primary focus during the development of ARTPEC-9. Features such as secure boot and signed operating systems are designed to protect each device from cyber threats. Since Axis develops the chip in-house, the company maintains complete control over the production process, further enhancing device security.

The introduction of AV1 as an open video encoding standard marks a significant development for streaming media in the surveillance industry. This support, along with improved image processing, allows ARTPEC-9 to deliver high-quality video with excellent detail and clarity. With AV1 and Axis Zipstream, seamless video transmission is ensured both on-premises and in the cloud.

The AXIS Camera Station currently supports AV1, and major video management solutions (VMS) providers, including Genetec and Milestone, will offer AV1 support as developments continue.
