Itron launches CityEdge IoT solutions for urban challenges
Itron has announced the unveiling of its CityEdge portfolio, which aims to address modern urban challenges through the integration of IoT technologies.
The CityEdge initiative rebrands Itron's established smart city and smart lighting solutions, offering a flexible platform for cities to build upon. It is designed to tackle issues in smart lighting, traffic and highways, environment and sustainability, public safety, energy, water, and utilities.
According to Itron, smart street lighting is vital in enhancing urban life, contributing to safety and visibility at night. However, cities must also confront additional challenges, including climate change, ageing infrastructure, and public safety.
A ThoughtLab study of 250 cities in 2024 identified climate change as the foremost challenge, followed by public health, affordable housing, crime and public safety, pollution, and infrastructure issues.
Itron's CityEdge portfolio offers a range of smart solutions across key areas, including smart lighting, traffic management, public safety, environmental sustainability, and energy/utilities. It enables real-time monitoring and control of streetlights, energy consumption, and traffic conditions while improving public safety with alerts for traffic incidents, utility pole damage, and environmental hazards such as floods and gas leaks.
Additionally, the portfolio supports emissions tracking, waste management, air quality monitoring, and water conservation through smart irrigation systems. In the energy and utility sector, it integrates smart endpoints for energy and water, as well as electric vehicles and distributed energy resources.
John Marcolini, Senior Vice President of Networked Solutions at Itron, stated, "No two cities are the same. Each city faces unique challenges, whether related to climate disruption, aging infrastructure, data security, pollution, affordable housing or budget constraints. That's why we are excited to unveil our CityEdge portfolio to address a wide array of these challenges."
Itron's collaboration with the City of Fuengirola in Southern Spain demonstrates the practical application of the portfolio. Ana Maria Mula, Mayor of Fuengirola, commented, "Since 2022, the City of Fuengirola has worked together with Itron to accelerate urban innovation and improve the livelihoods of our citizens in Southern Spain. By leveraging Itron's intelligent street lighting, noise detection and smart traffic monitoring solutions, we have significantly enhanced the safety of our city for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. Nearly two years later, Itron's portfolio has enabled us to create a more efficient, comfortable and sustainable environment for our citizens."
With CityEdge, cities can manage and control field devices on a unified platform, enhancing cost-effectiveness, operational efficiency, and accurate reporting. Itron claims the solutions are built on more than 270 million IoT endpoints deployed globally.
Marcolini added, "Itron is an industry leader, but we also know that no single vendor can solve every challenge. So, we operate under a set of open framework principles and encourage a growing ecosystem of third-party device and application developers to deliver solutions via the CityEdge portfolio."
