Atlassian enhances Loom with new features to boost productivity

Today

Atlassian has introduced a series of new features to its Loom asynchronous video platform, focused on streamlining business communication and information sharing within organisations.

The enhancements arrive as productivity challenges related to knowledge management continue to impact workplaces. A recent finding highlighted in Atlassian's release indicates that workers in India, on average, spend over 17 hours each week searching for information necessary to perform their jobs, equating to more than two full working days lost per week.

Loom, an Atlassian product, allows teams to record and distribute AI-powered video messages, designed to boost productivity and make knowledge readily available to staff and customers alike. The platform's integration with the Teamwork Graph makes these resources searchable, allowing new hires to easily access key content weeks or even months after joining an organisation.

New features

The latest set of Loom updates aims to help teams create video content that is both effective and efficient to produce. Among the newly added capabilities are several aimed at increasing engagement and reducing the time required for content creation:

Overlays allow users to add shapes, arrows, and text to their videos, particularly useful for demonstrations or spotlighting key information. Backgrounds, currently in beta, give users the ability to enhance videos visually without significant additional effort. Stylised captions enable messages to be more engaging and accessible, especially when videos are viewed without sound.

Also introduced are screenshot tools, permitting quick snaps of a user's screen, which can then be annotated, edited, or otherwise customised. Loom's speech tidying feature has seen further improvement to more effectively remove filler words, awkward pauses, and repetitive language—resulting in clearer, more concise communication.

User perspective

Sanchan Saxena, Head of Product, Teamwork Foundations at Atlassian, described the intention behind these upgrades:

"If you're creating videos for your team, your company, or your customers, you don't have time for endless takes or complicated tools. You need to move fast, stay polished, and deliver information that sticks. With Loom editing, you can create clear, consistent, and compelling video content in minutes, not hours. So whether you're announcing a change, launching a product, or enabling your team, Loom helps you communicate at scale — without burning out your calendar or your audience"

The appeal of Loom's utility in onboarding and training scenarios was echoed by Rob Litterst, Senior Manager at Hubspot, who said:

"Loom has been a game changer for tech onboarding with our team at Hubspot. It makes it so easy to show new hires exactly how they should use our most important systems. I hate to throw even more tech on someone's plate, but Loom is totally worth it."

Focus on efficiency

The new features are designed to address what Atlassian identifies as key pain points in digital communication, including inefficient meeting loads, time zone mismatches, and the difficulties of making training materials engaging and available for review.

By leveraging AI-powered search and editing tools, Loom aims to facilitate the distribution and recall of important organisational knowledge, while also reducing the amount of time teams must spend in live meetings or searching through documentation.

According to Atlassian, these features have been made available immediately to users and are part of the company's ongoing efforts to address the broader challenges of workplace collaboration and knowledge management.
